We LOVE the Natural History Museum of Utah! They have the most amazing displays and events! Our family tries to get there AT LEAST once a year! This weekend we are attending their Taste of Summer event and you should come with us!

The Natural History Museum of Utah will present a two-day summer food festival, The Taste of Summer, July 20 – 21 at the Rio Tinto Center, University of Utah, 301 Wakara Way

Saturday, July 20, 2019 – 10:00am to 5:00pm
Sunday, July 21, 2019 – 10:00am to 5:00pm

For the price of Museum admission, families can cool off, enjoy summertime games and activities, including making a large watermelon fan.

Over the two days, The Taste of Summer market will feature BBQ meals, gourmet ice cream and gelato, salsa, churros, and a wide array of baked desserts—all prepared for purchase by local food artisans. – Scroll down to see more info on the market.

Taste of Summer Workshops

Delicious culinary workshops, some geared for families, will be offered for an additional cost. REGISTER ONLINE SOON for specific events, as there is limited availability. Workshops include Tart Making; the Science of Ice Cream; Herbal Treats; Summer Cheese Board, Salsa, and Charcuterie, and Marvelous Mocktails.

Tarts with fruit.

Let’s Forage and Make Tarts! — 11:30 a.m. — Click to register

Learn how to make quick, simple, and delicious pitted fruit, fresh berry, and pine nuts tarts using locally-foraged ingredients and a dynamite, versatile shortbread crust recipe.  Discover where you can forage local fruits and pine nuts and learn how to get the most out of your backyard orchard.

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream is the flashiest ice cream around! Using liquid nitrogen and the laws of science, Sub Zero can flash-freeze treats right before your very eyes!  Discover the scientific principles behind Sub Zero’s ice cream and sample their famous ice cream, refreshing Italian ice, and sure-to-entertain Dragon’s Breath. This workshop is certified kid-friendly for parents and children to enjoy together!

Get the most out of your herb garden and discover how to incorporate some herbal flavors into your soon-to-be favorite summer treats.  Learn how to make Lemon Rosemary Popsicles, Basil Ice Cream, and Lavender Panna Cotta.  This workshop is ideal for beginning and experienced home cooks.

With all the tomatoes, peppers, and onions popping up in our backyards, it’s the perfect time of year to make homemade salsa.  And who better to learn from than the Queen of Salsa herself!  Discover the basics of salsa crafting, learn how to pick the right peppers for your pallet, and learn how to use a traditional Mexican molcajete to make a variety of salsas, pico de gallo, and a mind-blowing shrimp ceviche.

The Inside Scoop

Celebrate a Taste of Summer with NHMU and you could win a year’s worth of ice cream!* There are two ways to participate.
  1. Pick up a passport at NHMU’s Taste of Summer celebration and have it stamped by participating vendors. Look for the NHMU team member under the watermelon umbrella where you can submit your entry.AND/OR
  2. Snap a selfie while enjoying a summertime treat and post it on Instagram** using the hashtag #nhmuSummer

A random winner will be selected from the combined pool of online and in-person entries on July 25 and will be contacted via email or Instagram message.

* Winner will receive a gift certificate worth the equivalent of one pint of ice cream a week at Harmons for a year.
