As most of you know on December 1st, Davis County was hit with a Monster Wind Storm! Hurricane force winds ripped through our city and devastated trees and homes. I have lived in Davis county for most of my life and I would never expect that I would have to deal with hurricane winds. But there I was sitting helplessly in our home watching trees and fences blow over, trying to keep my kiddos calm, and then the power went out.
Our neighborhood was hit particularly hard. There were huge trees everywhere, toppled like little toys. Our neighbors motor home tumbled end over end, I even saw a trampoline wrapped around a large tree.
Here are just a few pictures of the homes in my neighborhood. Sorry for the picture overload. I probably have over a hundred and it was really hard to narrow it down to just a few:
We were really lucky! The damage to our home was minimal. We lost part of our fence and small amount of shingles off the roof. We felt really blessed.
Unfortunately, due to the astronomical amount of trees that came down, we lost power to our home. Our neighborhood was without power for Four Days! That’s right! In the middle of the winter, when it is dark outside from about 5pm until 7am, we didn’t have any power! No light, whatsoever! Let me tell you, it was Dark and it was Cold! We thought we were very prepared. We had a TON of flashlights, extra batteries, TONS of candles, and even small propane heaters that are made to run inside. We were more prepared than some people but I was surprised at a few things:
First: It is DARK! I mean REALLY DARK, when no one has power. Without the glow from the city you can not see Anything. You need to have a flashlight with you ALL THE TIME!
Second: Flashlights run out of batteries FAST! I have never been without power for longer than a day or two and I’ve never had kids in those situations. Kids love to play with flashlights. They leave them on and the batteries run out fast. Plus, they need to have one (or more) at all times, because they get scared in the dark!
Third: You get bored, Fast! Without ample light to read, play games, and do other things you will go crazy!
So after this “learning experience” I went looking for something more long term and more reliable for our emergency preparedness needs. I wanted something that would be a worthwhile item to have in my home. Something that I wouldn’t have to think about, that I knew would be there when I needed it, and I knew would work!
AND I FOUND IT!!!
It’s the Hybrid Light Flashlight! This thing is amazing! I love it! This is why:
These awesome little flashlights can run continuously on one charge for 8 hours. What’s even more impressive, the light won’t dim. It fully charges in 8 hours of direct sunlight but it also will charge with indoor lighting, which means that you will be able to charge it even if there is cloud cover. I keep ours in a windowsill.
There is a cap on the end of the light which holds two button batteries as a backup. Hence the hybrid in the name. Battery durability is quite good. While I haven’t had these lights for that long, the solar battery is supposed to hold its charge for up to three years while the lithium button batteries are good in storage for up to seven.
These batteries are not as affected by cold temperatures like alkaline batteries. You can remove the button batteries so I took them out of my kids’ lights. They also float on water and are water resistant down to 80 feet.
Basically, the lights are tough, light weight, waterproof, bright, affordable, and highly dependable. But you don’t have to take my word for it! Hybrid Light is giving away one of these flashlights to TWO of our readers! All you have to do to is sign up for our emails then go to Hybrid Light’s website and check out the lights. Come back here and comment on this post telling us what your favorite product is, and why. That’s it! There are also other ways to get extra entries that will give you a better chance at winning one of these awesome flashlights. (You can get up to 12 entries! My husband and I go camping often in the summer in southern UT. I think that the Hybrid Camping Lantern would really come in handy for us. More light than a headlamp and we can hang it up to distribute light instead of trying to aim a flashlight somewhere or our small headlamps.

I learned The smaller model (HL40) yields 40 lumens which is equal to 1 watt of power or 16 standard LED’s, while the HL 120, which provides 120 Lumens, will be three times as bright from three watts of power.
I like the Camping Lantern. It would be great for those days when the electricity goes out for a few hours — especially in the evenings. I don’t like lighting candles in the bathrooms.
Hybrid Compact Lantern or the Camping Lantern – they both last 6 hours on a charge. My family can use them for camping, car emergency. and when the light goes out in the house.

I would love to have the Hybrid SpotLight so I could see what my dogs are barking at when I let them out for their last potty break of the night. It’s always something, and I’d like to be certain it’s a cat or an owl, not a robber.
