Last week we were able to attend Cavalia’s Odysseo show, and if I had to sum up the experience in one word, that would be “Incredible!”
I’ve loved horses since I was a little girl, and even had the opportunity to work at the Appaloosa Horse Club when I was in lived in northern Idaho about 10 years ago. We’d travel to Oklahoma City and Fort Worth every year to put on National and World Championship Horse Shows, and I also had the opportunity to go to several other events, my favorite being the TELUS Battle of the Breeds Competition at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Alberta. More recently, I attended the Breeders Cup World Thoroughbred Championships as a spectator, as horse racing has always been one of my favorite sports. But never have I seen something like Odysseo.
Odysseo brings together equine and human in such a beautiful way. The performance by both horse and human was simply stunning, and it was all made even better by the remarkable scenery and phenomenal technology. I loved watching so many different breeds of horses all in one show, showcasing what their kind does best. The respect the human performers have for the horses, and the willingness to perform that the horses give in return was just thrilling.Much of the time, the horses performed without any sort of harness or bridle, and sometimes you’d see a horse just not cooperating. This was live entertainment! It honestly made it all even better. These horses aren’t just robots, doing exactly what their handlers wanted them to do. It was so interesting to observe the handlers gently work with the horses to guide them back to where they needed to be.
The actors in the show were also so talented! From flips and jumps, to swinging off a horse or acrobats using aerial silks, it was amazing! Also, the original music was all performed LIVE. The band was up in the top of the wings of the white big top. I seriously didn’t know it was live music till someone pointed them out to me. They were amazing!
There was one particular group of performers that was SO MUCH FUN to watch. They did flips and clapped and really got the audience into it. If I had even half the energy they have, my house would be spotless and I’d be off running marathons every weekend. They could do like 20 flips in a row over and over again, lift and throw each other, and then they’d top it off with something even better. It was just incredible!
