Hale Centre Theatre has another spectacular production in store for us as Madame Guillotine, Percy Blakeney, and Chauvelin Return to the stage for The Scarlet Pimpernel! – This is one of my favorite musicals. I’m giddy to see this!
Opening this week, and back by popular demand, the spectacular Broadway musical ignites the Hale’s new Young Living Centre Stage with all the mystique and romance of the classic novel.
The Scarlet Pimpernel is set in England and France during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution and follows the entwined stories of Percy Blakeney, his wife Marguerite St. Just and Chauvelin.
On the outside, the characters are on the same side, but behind the scenes is a different story: Percy perceives Marguerite, through the devices of Chauvelin, has sent a dear friend to the guillotine, making Percy question her loyalty and their marriage. Meanwhile, the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel and his band of brothers are causing an uproar in the revolution as they continuously go undetected in saving lives from the guillotine. Who is this mysterious savior? Why does he bear a striking resemblance to Percy? How long before his identity is revealed?
“This production is just plain fun! It takes your mind off of the troubles of your day and reminds you of a time when political battles could literally mean losing your head,” said John J. Sweeney, director, Hale Centre Theatre’s The Scarlet Pimpernel. “Our leads playing Percy, Marguerite and Chauvelin bring such a wide range of skillsets and pure passion to the stage. Being in The Scarlet Pimpernel is a dream come true for many of them and that feeling certainly comes across in their performances.”
I can’t wait to see this musical in the new theatre! The added space and advanced technology in the new space have allowed for the creation of a 23-foot guillotine and three-tiered carousel, among other effects.
